A few words about our Buddha from Myanmar
-
If you look closely at our Buddha you will notice a small round wax seal attached to every piece by a short length of string. This is a seal issued by the Government of Myanmar and insures that the pieces are not stolen and that they were exported legally. The Ministry of Culture and Religion must first check to make sure that the origins of every single Buddha can be traced and therefore be proven to be legally purchased. The Ministry of Export must then approve that the item does not come under any list of banned exports. As you can imagine, in Myanmar this takes quite some time. Up to six months in some cases but as you will see this is an important piece of wax.
-
In Thailand it is illegal to export antique Thai Buddha. Therefore any of the real antique Buddha that you see will not have originated from Thailand. Most come from Myanmar and you won’t see a wax seal attached. That’s because they’re stolen from temples in Myanmar and then smuggled across the many border crossings between Myanmar and Thailand. In this scenario the only people that make money out of the transaction are the smugglers, the border crossing officials and the sellers.
-
In Myanmar today most people live in abject poverty under an authoritative “democracy” and their chances of making money are few and far between. Our Buddha are purchased from the people of Myanmar, the money goes to the people of Myanmar and you can be assured that none of our merchandise in any way compromises the country of Myanmar.
-
The great temples of the world are being destroyed by indiscriminate treasure hunters and the profits support a very few people. As a buyer, most people don’t understand the situation. Now you do and you can help to stop this pillaging by being aware and asking questions. Please don’t buy stolen or smuggled Myanmar Buddha or any other artifact for that matter.
Thank you, Karma Bali
